Chorus, New Zealand’s largest open-access internet infrastructure company, uses FME to improve asset management by combining various data sources into a central system. This solution allows for proactive maintenance, enhanced service reliability, and compliance with regulations, meeting the growing need for high-speed broadband.

Chorus is the largest telecommunications infrastructure company in New Zealand, serving both urban centres like Auckland and rural towns such as Owaka. To provide fast and reliable internet for its customers, Chorus needs to manage and maintain thousands of assets across the country, including fibre and copper networks, cables, ducts, poles, network buildings, and IT systems. In the last six years, the demand for fibre has doubled, with customers now consuming an average of more than 600GB per month. To address this growing demand, Chorus needed an effective way to monitor its assets and ensure reliable internet service throughout New Zealand.

Chorus used FME to create a comprehensive inventory of its assets, including age and condition. FME efficiently consolidated data from various sources and formats, streamlining the generation of network asset information snapshots.

Turning data into actionable insights

A key example of Chorus leveraging FME is for duct asset data, which is comprised of information about conduit housing fibre optic and copper cables. With FME, Chorus efficiently collects and integrates duct information from field surveys and records into a central system. Data analysis identifies patterns in age and condition, allowing Chorus to prioritize maintenance and strategic planning. One of the main advantages of incorporating FME is the ability to create a repeatable process for each asset review cycle, guaranteeing reliable results every time.

Data analysis made easy

With the power of FME, Chorus has simplified a previously disparate data analysis process and established a complete and secure record of network assets, with analysis completed under tight deadlines. The detailed dataset enhances efficiency and reliability by significantly reducing manual processing hours and supporting informed decision-making regarding infrastructure investments and upgrades. This initiative is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for high-speed broadband.

Chorus has saved hundreds of hours and transformed its approach to asset management using FME, securing uninterrupted, reliable internet service across New Zealand.

With FME, Chorus has developed a unified process to analyse our asset data, ensuring reliable and resilient repeatable infrastructure reporting.
